Surround Yourself With…

I’m sure you’ve heard just as I heard growing up that we need to be careful of who we hang around with. Or that not everyone is our friend. Or that famous question of “if everyone jumped off a bridge would you?” when we said “but all our friends are doing it”. I use to think my parents were just being difficult but as I’ve gotten older I realize how important it is to surround yourself with the correct people.

In the insurance industry, as with many other industries, making contacts, especially good contacts, is important if your goal is to move up in your career. You won’t get very far if you are connected with the person who is always looking to cut corners or is the office gossip or the office “drunk”.  The same goes for our personal life.

If your goal is to become the best juggler in the world you would surround yourself with other jugglers. If your goal is to be a famous movie star you would surround yourself with other actors, screen writers, producers etc. But what if your goal is to get out of debt? Or move across country? Or write a book?

God’s word tells us that bad company corrupts good morals (1 Corinthians 15:33), he who walks with wise men will be wise,  but the companion of fools will suffer harm (Proverbs 13:20) and a man of violence entices his neighbor and leads him in a way that is not good (Proverbs 16:29).

It’s important that the people spend the most time with have the same or similar mindsets as we do. If your goals is to become the best juggler in the world you would surround yourself with other jugglers. If your goal is to be a famous movie star you would surround yourself with other actors, screen writers, producers, etc. but what if your goal is to get out of debt? Or move across country? Or write a book? Are the people in your corner supportive, loving and able to keep you on track or are they negative, judgmental and try to dissuade you going after your dreams? David had Jonathon, Ruth had Naomi, Esther had Mordecai. In all cases they were mutually supportive of one another and understood the importance of being a good friend. In other words they surrounded themselves with people who could speak life into their situation and who knew the value of constructive criticism.

Who are you surrounding yourself with?

  1. Well done Melissa. This is so true and it’s for every area of our lives. This also includes family members, both biological and our church family, who are not a positive influence in our lives. We can not allow their bad behavior to influence us to make compromises. Because they are family, we can’t just sit there and say nothing when they are saying things that we know is not godly. We can’t allow them to gossip, curse and put down others, and not speak up. And we can’t deceive ourselves into thinking that we will not be affected because that is a lie from satan himself. It is time for the people of God to stand up for righteousness.

  2. That is a very good question every Christian should ask themselves, ” Who are we surrounding ourselves with?” If we are children of God the Holy Spirit resides in us. Is he pleased with where
we take him or the things we subject ourselves to? Let’s not grieve the Holy Spirit,
